SAMBURU NATIONAL RESERVE

SAMBURU NATIONAL RESERVE

Samburu National Reserve is one of Kenya’s most unique and less crowded safari destinations—raw, rugged, and incredibly beautiful. It sits in the northern part of the country along the Ewaso Ng’iro River and feels very different from places like the Maasai Mara National Reserve.

🌿 What makes Samburu special

Samburu is known for its semi-arid landscape—think acacia trees, dusty plains, rocky outcrops, and a winding river that attracts wildlife year-round. It’s quieter and more exclusive, so you often feel like you have the wilderness to yourself.

🐾 The “Samburu Special Five”

This is the biggest highlight. You’ll see animals that you won’t easily find elsewhere in Kenya:

  • Grevy’s zebra (larger, thinner stripes)
  • Reticulated giraffe (beautiful geometric patterns)
  • Somali ostrich (blue legs and neck)
  • Beisa oryx
  • Gerenuk (the “giraffe gazelle” that stands on hind legs to eat)

🐘 Other wildlife

Samburu is also famous for:

  • Large herds of elephants
  • Lions, leopards, and sometimes cheetahs
  • Crocodiles and hippos along the river

🌍 Culture

The reserve is home to the Samburu people, closely related to the Maasai. Visiting a village gives a real insight into:

  • Traditional dress (bright beads and cloth)
  • Nomadic lifestyle
  • Deep connection to land and livestock

🚙 Activities

  • Game drives (morning & evening)
  • Guided nature walks (in some conservancies)
  • Cultural visits
  • Birdwatching (over 450 species!)

☀️ Best time to visit

  • June to October: Best wildlife viewing (dry season)
  • December to March: Also great, with fewer crowds

💡 Why choose Samburu

If you want:

  • Fewer tourists
  • Unique animals
  • A more “wild” and untouched feel

Samburu is honestly one of Kenya’s hidden gems.
